The City of Launceston will be upgrading the intersection of Invermay Road and Lindsay Street from a roundabout to signalised traffic lights to improve safety and connectivity for all road users.

This upcoming project be split into three work zones, with Crossroads Civil Contracting scheduled to begin construction in January 2025. The works are expected to take approximately 15 weeks to complete.

This upgrade aims to deliver significant improvements to the Invermay area by addressing current issues related to pedestrian and cyclist safety, as well as traffic flow.

Please refer to the information below for each of the work zones.

  • Zone 1 - Invermay Road/ Lindsay Street

We are upgrading the Invermay Road/ Lindsay Street intersection from a roundabout to signalised traffic lights. Key features of the design include:

    • Remove roundabout and install traffic lights
    • realign and install new kerb and channel
    • rehabilitate asphalt roadway and construct a raised intersection
    • install new access ramps and traffic islands
    • improve stormwater drainage at the intersection
    • upgrade street lighting

The majority of this zone will be completed as night works.

  • Zone 2 - Tamar Street/ Boland Street

We will be changing kerb and channel alignments, adjusting traffic lanes and coordinating traffic lights at the Tamar/Boland intersection.

This zone will be completed as day works.

View the traffic management plan for this zone in the "Document Library".

  • Zone 3 - Invermay Road pavement reconstruction

We will reconstruct the failed pavement on the left-hand southbound lane of Invermay Road between Bedford and Lindsay Streets.

Kerb and channel works will be completed as day works.

The road reconstruction will be completed as night works.

While we complete this important upgrade, the Invermay and Inveresk precincts will remain open for business as usual throughout the construction period, with access maintained for traders, suppliers and customers.

We encourage the community to continue to shop locally and support local businesses during this important upgrade.

During construction, changed traffic conditions will be necessary to allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently. This will include a reduced 40km/h speed limit through the work zone and the possibility of lane closures or detours.

The project will involve both day and night work. During night shifts, expect increased noise, vibration and lighting.

Please allow for moderate traffic delays, localised detours and extra time to travel.

Once the roundabout is removed and before traffic lights are installed, there will be an interim traffic arrangement in place through the intersection.

A reminder to take care while moving through work zones and follow traffic management to ensure your safety but also the safety of contractors.
