What is a Heritage List Review?

Did you know that Launceston is Australia's third oldest city?

As such, we have some of our nation's oldest buildings, historical archaeology, streetscapes and planted trees.

Heritage listing plays an important role in ensuring we retain our city's character and community's sense of place. The heritage protection system exists to conserve, manage, promote and celebrate our heritage.

We want to ensure our city's heritage is protected for generations to come.

The City of Launceston is updating its local Heritage List to ensure our beautiful city continues to grow and thrive, whilst respecting our history, for many generations to come.

Watch this short explainer video below to provide more information on what City of Launceston would like to achieve in collaboration with the community.

Reviewing our Heritage List: What it means to you...

Council are looking to introduce new individual properties to our local Heritage List, in addition to amendments of existing listings and removals of any listings no longer considered significant.

In addition, Council will include several new heritage precincts to our city, capturing groups of houses or streetscapes, significant for their collective value.

The Launceston local Heritage List is maintained within the Launceston Local Provisions Schedule of the Tasmanian Planning Scheme. The list can be accessed on the Tasmanian Planning Scheme website here: Tasmanian Planning Scheme – Tasmanian Planning Commission Website.

Local heritage listings can also be explored via the City of Launceston Heritage Places map

Alternatively, you can access this information via Listmap here: LISTmap - Land Information System Tasmania. Please note, to view the Local heritage listings, you must 'Add Layer' > select 'Planning' and add the 'Tasmanian Planning Scheme Code Overlay' layer.

The heritage protection system exists to conserve, manage, promote and celebrate our heritage.

The City of Launceston's Heritage Register is managed and protected under the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 and the Tasmanian Planning Scheme.

Under these acts, it is Council's duty to conserve buildings, areas or other places which were viewed as being of significate, aesthetic, architectural or historic interest, or otherwise of special cultural value.

The City of Launceston is engaging with property owners whose properties have been identified as having special and important cultural value and meaning within our municipality.

Through the initial consultation period, property owners will receive a letter to advise their property has been identified and is either being considered for addition, removal or amendment to the local Heritage List.

This webpage has been designed to provide property owners with information that might be useful in understanding local heritage and the process for updating the local Heritage List.

Heritage belongs to all of us. It is a part of who we are. It is what we inherit, appreciate today and think is important to protect and pass onto future generations. You have the opportunity to collaborate with us on this project.
