We're improving the streetscape on Cameron Street!

This project is part of the City Heart Place Plan, which outlines a strategic vision for shaping the city’s central area - roughly bounded by Cimitiere, Wellington, Elizabeth and Tamar Streets.

Within the City Heart Place Plan, Cameron Street sits within the character area known as the Civic Spine.

This area is Launceston’s heritage corridor, linking Royal Park, Civic Square, and City Park with wide, quiet streets and historic government and legal buildings sitting between the city centre and riverfront.

The vision for the Civic Spine is a vibrant, green boulevard forming part of a cultural trail linking major attractions. With low traffic, it can host markets, events, and outdoor dining, creating a lively, people-friendly space.

To help achieve this vision, the project will begin with improvements to the streetscape and includes a pedestrian crossing and tree planting.

Learn more about the project below.

To help achieve the vision outlined above for Cameron Street, this project includes the following improvements:

  • a mid-block kerb outstand and pedestrian crossing
  • two street trees, garden beds and greenery
  • Seating on both sides of the street

Please see below a basic concept design showing the improvements.

The initial streetscape improvements will occur between 28–32 and 17–33 Cameron Street, which is adjacent to Hotel Grand Chancellor.

As well as helping to bring the Civic Spine vision from the City Heart Place Plan to life, these improvements will help to calm traffic and improve the public space through the inclusion of greenery and seating.

It will also offer a clearly defined, safer crossing point for pedestrians by narrowing the crossing distance. Similar improvements can already be seen in nearby locations such as George Street and Charles Street.

Yes, two parking spaces on the northern side of the street and two on the southern side will be repurposed to accommodate the improvements.

Construction is scheduled to commence on Monday 11 August 2025, with completion expected by mid-October 2025, weather permitting.

Working hours will be between 7am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
