The time has come!
The City of Launceston has begun undertaking major works at the Transport and Road Safety Centre in Lawrence Vale Road to make it structurally sound.
We know that this is a much-loved facility utilised by thousands of people every year since it was opened in 1980. However the structure itself, (an old water tank originally known as the Lawrence Vale Reservoir) needs to be significantly altered for the centre to be made safe for public use and as a result the new centre will look very different to the old one.
This work is being undertaken in three stages and is expected to be completed in 2022, weather permitting. The current stage of works consists of earthworks, while the second stage will see the floor of the tank lifted and the height of the walls reduced. The third stage will be the internal fit out of the facility, creating spaces that people will interact with and create many more amazing memories. While the centre will look different, we want to make sure it continues to serve its purpose and remains a popular, cost friendly venue for Launceston families. .
To ensure we get it right, we want to hear from the many people who have visited the centre in recent years. We encourage you to chat with your children about what they would like to see in the new centre as well.
How you can get involved:
- Check out the drawing and the engineering plans here to understand how the centre will look once it has been made structurally sound
- Then complete the SURVEY and help us understand what you loved about the Launceston Bike Centre, and what you would like to see included in the NEW Bike Centre
- If you have a fond memory of the old Bike Centre you would love to share with everyone please log in/register, and tell us about it here
- Check out the The History of the Bike Centre explaining the evolution of the Bike Centre.
As this project nears completion we will be coming back to you asking for name suggestions for this new facility, so start thinking!
This project closed at 5.00pm on Friday 4 June, 2021.
Survey
CLOSED: This survey has concluded.
Launceston's Bike Centre
As you complete this survey please keep in mind that the Centre will essentially remain an educational Transport and Safety Centre with a simulated road and traffic layout, including pedestrian and bike pathways and automated intersections. The old Bike Centre required a lift due to the steep nature of the internal ramp. The new design requires significant earthworks, which means a lift is no longer required as the centre will be fully accessible via an external ramp. Additional carparking has also been created.
