Help us to green Mayfield!

In November 2023, the City of Launceston endorsed its first Urban Greening Strategy. The Urban Greening Strategy aims to deliver a strategic greening approach that includes trees, shrubs, grasslands, structures (such as green roofs, walls and arbours) and other vegetation on public and private land.

As part of the Urban Greening Strategy, we are developing precinct plans for priority suburbs and Mayfield has been selected as the first of the precinct plans.

The precinct plans will focus on creating green and shaded streets with a particular focus around schools, bus stops and active transport routes, as well as new planting in parks and reserves.

These plans will help us to prioritise streets to be planted, and establish targets for each year. They outline what trees will be planted where, when and why over a period of five (5) years.

During April and May 2024, we engaged with the Mayfield community to guide the development of the precinct plan for Mayfield.

The Mayfield community were invited to share their ideas at our drop-in information session held at the Muylatina Child and Family Learning Centre, Mayfield.

Students engaged with us during the weeklong drop-in session/ school workshops, where they voted on their favourite animal, the children chose the swift parrot as their number one pick!

This was a great opportunity to hear from the community and East Tamar Primary School on the future of street trees and planting within their neighbourhood.

Hargrave Crescent has been chosen as the first street for planting in Mayfield due to its proximity to the school, numerous bus stops, and connection to public places.

Planting works commenced Wednesday, 3 July 2024.

We have begun marking the sites for tree planting and aim to create a consistent avenue along the street. Although, some locations may not be suitable due to the presence of underground assets.

The tree species to be planted include:

  • Banksia marginata
  • Corymbia ficifolia 'Vermilion Fire'
  • Eucalyptus 'Euky Dwarf'
  • Lagerstroemia indica
  • Ulmus parvifolia 'Todd'

How were these tree species selected?

These species have been carefully selected based on site suitability and feedback we received from students at East Tamar Primary School (years three and four).

Students engaged with us during the weeklong drop-in session/ school workshops in May 2024, where they voted on their favourite animal, the children chose the swift parrot as their number one pick!

Swift parrots, a critically endangered species native to Australia, are renowned for their vibrant green plumage and remarkable migratory patterns.

These agile fliers depend heavily on the nectar from flowering gums, particularly during their breeding season. Flowering gums, such as Eucalyptus trees, provide essential sustenance and habitat for these birds, whose numbers are dwindling due to habitat loss and predation.

Hargrave Crescent will feature a number of flowering gum varieties to support the swift parrots. By planting more flowering gums, we can create a supportive environment that enhances the survival prospects of these birds. These trees not only offer crucial food resources but also contribute to the broader ecosystem's health, supporting various wildlife species and promoting biodiversity.

Thank you for your support and understanding as we work together to create a greener, more vibrant community.

We will also be planting new trees, garden beds and shrubs in Mayfield parks, starting with Torrens Street Park.
